Why do we worship gods in Hinduism?

We have different gods in Hinduism. Numerous gods are worship and uncountable temples are around the world with millions of followers. But why do we actually worship them?

The answers are easy, to be happy or to get anything we want. But how did this idea came up? How first person to worship god did came to know about this facts that by worshipping god we can be happy?

But first of all we should know about what actually Hindu text books tell about this. Is this correct that by worshipping god our unhappiness will turn into happiness?

Actually, some image of Indus valley civilization suggest that the concept of worshipping started before Veda period. People used to worship nature as well as unknown power called as god. Slowly people start to elaborate this concept. They add various elements in this process which form religion. Then religious thoughts and ideas start to be preserved. Those ideas are Veda and Purans.

Our Hinduism’s main principle are these text books and Veda are consider to be old among them.  But in the oldest Veda i.e. Rig-Veda we can’t find about worshipping gods for a specific purpose. However, in other younger Veda such as Sam-Veda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda the process of worshipping and praying enlarged. Many new ideas, process & concepts were introduced. Moreover, new methods were added. Yet, the purpose of worshipping gods was not clearly defined.

Then in the time of Upanishad something interesting was introduced, which is surly one reason to worship gods in Hinduism. The term MOKSHYA (मोक्ष) was introduced.  Upanishads like the Svetasvatara and Maitriare some text books which mention about Moksha. Whereas, Kathaka Upanishad make clear about moksha. Here in book I section III Yama describe about Mokshya to Naciketa.

·         But what actually is MOKSHYA? मोक्ष

Moksha simply means to be free. But we have freedom and we can do anything.

Then free from what?

Free from the circle of rebirth, the circle of pain. When we die then our soul will find new body. After death of that body then it will shift to another body. This process will continue forever and in our every new life we will have problems such as struggle to food, pain, mental and physical problems. These problems will never end until we will be free from this re-birth process. So, to break this process we should get Mokshya and be free forever. We will never be in pain then after.

·         Then what are way to get Mokshya.

In Veda there is mention of Kaam, Artha & Dharma. Later in Upanishad period, Mokshya was added to this concept. According to this a man should do Dharma so that this world will be balanced. Likewise Artha means to do good activity through which he can live or be alive. Then kaam means to use those resources which was obtain from artha and to do nooky activities to continue generations. At last Mokshya will be granted if s/he have done these activities with honestly.

Whereas, as per Shrimadvagbad Geeta shree Krishna says that human show know the meaning or purpose of life which is called Gyan marga. After knowing the purpose of life s/he should follow it and do as per it which is Karma marga. And last human should go towards Bhakti marga which means to worship god so that we will get mokshya.

But some text consider mokshya as perfection. After quitting your normal life you will no longer need anything to satisfy yourself. In this state you are free and no one can compel you to do any things. It means you should do nothing and now you are perfect. Nothings matter to you.

The concept of mokshya are differ from text to text but the main idea of Mokshya is to be free from pain. So, for this we all start to worship gods.
